SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR: JR SMITH

J.R. Smith began this season wanting to be the Knicks’ starting shooting guard.

Coach Mike Woodson needed scoring off the bench, which left Smith upset for much of training camp. But Smith played the minutes of a starter and never missed a game this season because of injury as he became the Knicks’ second scoring option behind Carmelo Anthony.

After the best season of his nine-year career, Smith won the N.B.A.’s Sixth Man of the Year Award Monday afternoon, receiving 484 points, including 72 first-place votes, from writers and broadcasters. Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers was second with 352 points and 31 first-place votes.

Smith averaged 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in 80 games this season.
